Printed Blue Delphinium and Nigella Pressed Flower Greetings Card 5x7"
A design dear to my heart. It was created at a time when I desperately needed the emotional relief that creativity can bring.
My dad has Parkinsons and Lewy Body dementia, which brings all sorts of challenges, but the hardest aspect is seeing the struggles that my mum, his main carer, has to contend with. Being a support to them both is something I do wholeheartedly, but equally brings a barrel load of emotion and frustration.
During a particularly low point I took some time out to create, as a way to reduce the stress and lack of control felt over their situation. Subconciously I chose blue (the colour of Parkinsons UK and very much how I was feeling at the time) and created a very precise, repeating pattern which, with hindsight, clearly comes from the need to regain control.
Floral symbolism plays a big part in this design.
- The title of the design 'Love in the mist of Parkinsons' is taken from the common name for the Nigella, 'Love in the mist' that features heavily, and expresses how love plays an important part in caring for someone with Parkinsons.
- Delphiniums express big heartedness and dignity, both an expression of how I feel about my dad and his own character.
- Forget me nots. Dementia creates a lot of challenges for the individual and their carers, brain function and memory loss being one of the most well known issues. Forget me not is both a plea to the individual and a reminder to those around them not to forget the person at the heart of this heartbreaking condition.
The 5x7" greetings card is blank inside for your own personal message, whether that's a thank you, a birthday greeting or a simple 'thinking of you'.
